Thistles by the Shore - Finding Inspiration Along Scotland's Coast

There are certain places in Scotland that seem to capture everything I love in one view, colourful wildflowers, peaceful cottages, grazing sheep and the ever changing sea. Those are the scenes that stay with me long after I've come home from a walk, and they're often the starting point for a new painting.

My latest original painting, Thistles by the Shore, celebrates that unmistakable Scottish landscape. A little whitewashed cottage sits quietly beside the coast while sheep graze among vibrant pink and purple thistles, with the sea and distant hills stretching away under a bright summer sky.

Scotland's National Flower

The humble thistle has become one of Scotland's most enduring symbols. Although it's often thought of as a prickly weed, I've always been drawn to its beauty. The rich purple flowers catch the light beautifully, bringing bursts of colour to roadsides, coastal paths and meadows throughout the summer.

In this painting, the thistles take centre stage, adding movement and energy to the foreground while leading your eye towards the peaceful cottage beyond.

Painting the Solway Coast

Living and working in Carsethorn, Dumfries & Galloway, I'm lucky to be surrounded by inspiring coastal scenery. The Solway coast has a quiet beauty that's very different from Scotland's more dramatic landscapes. Gentle hills, tidal shores, grazing sheep and white cottages create a landscape that feels timeless.

Rather than painting one exact location, I enjoy combining the elements that make this part of Scotland so special. My paintings are inspired by the feeling of being here rather than acting as a photograph of a single place.

Bringing the Scene to Life

I painted Thistles by the Shore in acrylic, building up layers of colour to create texture and depth. I wanted the flowers to feel alive in the sunshine while keeping the overall scene calm and inviting.

One of the things I enjoy most is balancing detail with simplicity. The sheep quietly grazing, the white cottage, the distant sea and the colourful foreground all work together to create a painting that invites you to pause for a moment and imagine yourself there.

When I first began sketching Meadow Mischief, I knew I wanted to capture the joyful chaos of badgers in a meadow full of buzzing bees, fluttering butterflies, dappled sunlight dancing through tall grasses, and maybe just a hint of mischief hidden in every nook. This isn’t just a picture to assemble; it’s a scene to get lost in.

Every tiny detail from the pattern of petals to the colours was designed to reward patience and spark joy.

Meadow Mischief is a satisfying challenge. With Ravensburger’s signature precision-cut pieces and a tapestry of tones and textures, this puzzle balances:

As an artist, I gravitate toward scenes that feel alive, moments that seem to move even in stillness. Meadows have that spirit, a riot of life and colour in a peaceful setting. With Meadow Mischief, I wanted to bottle that feeling, the harmony and the hilarity tucked into every petal and blade of grass.

I’m delighted to share my 2026 calendar with you. Each year I carefully select a collection of my paintings that I hope will bring a little warmth, colour, and joy into your home all year long.

For the cover, I chose a piece that celebrates some of my favourite themes – busy bees, bold flowers, and a cosy cottage under a glowing sky. I love how the bright pink tulips and blue globe thistles frame the scene, while the golden moon shines over the little house with its sunny yellow door and red post box. It’s a simple scene, but one that always makes me smile.

Inside, you’ll find thirteen of my artworks, each one inspired by the small moments and familiar sights of life in Scotland – quirky wildlife, cheerful coastal cottages, and the beauty of our countryside and gardens. My paintings are about capturing joy in the everyday, and I hope that each month brings you a smile or a gentle reminder to notice the little things around you.
