Finding inspiration on my doorstep - How Dumfries and Galloway shapes my art

One of the things I am most often asked is where do I get my inspiation from? Well the answer is simple I just look out my studio window.

Living on the beautiful Solway Coast in Dumfries and Galloway, I am surrounded by an ever changing landscape. A landscape that changes with the seasons, the tides and the weather. From my studio in the village of Carsethorn I gather inspiration from the things that many people might overlook. A noisy gull, a seal popping it's head above water, a neighbour walking their dog on the beach or some Belted Galloways grazing in a nearby field.

The iconic Belted Galloway Cattle feature regularly in my paintings. With their distinctive black and white markings they are an absolute joy to paint and are very symbolic of the Dumfries and Galloway region. Whether grazing below a moonlit sky or nibbling on wildflowers they often find their way into my work and have become a firm favourite with collectors.

My paintings are not intended to be exact recordings of a scene. instead they are a celebration of the joy, colour and simple pleasures that are found in every day rual life. The landscape becomes brighter, the flowers become bolder and the animals develop their own personalities.

I feel incredibly fortunate to live and work in such an inspiring place. the wildlife and much loved Belties continue to provide an endless supply of ideas for new paintings.
